ENPHO’s Milestones

For ENPHO, 2016 marks the completion of 25 successful years of service. It completed its 25 year journey on safe water, sustainable sanitation, hygiene promotion, community based WASH, disaster risk reduction and emergency WASH, environmental studies including capacity building and advocacy. ENPHO completed more than 300 projects providing services to more than 3.7 million people in Nepal.


1990 Water Quality Monitoring of Bagmati River and Kathmandu’s Water Supply System.
1991 ENPHO Laboratory accrediated by Government body “Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology” under NEPLAS system based on ISO 17025
1992 Initiated Air Quality Monitoring for the first time in Nepal within Kathmandu Valley.
1993 Developed FRC (Free Residual Chlorine) test kit to analyze FRC of drinking water supply schemes at the field level.Later, ENPHO developed ENPHO Water Quality Field Test Kit in 2001 and ENPHO Body Belt Incubator in 2014.
1994 Production and distribution of “PIYUSH” chlorine Solution.
1995 Implemented integrated community based WASH project in Siraha. Till date, integrated WASH projects have been implemented in 30 districts.
1996 Initiated medical and solid waste management project in Siraha.
1997 Introduced Constructed Wetland for Wastewater Treatment System in Nepal.
1998 Provided technical support to establish first faecal sludge treatment plant at Teku, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office.
1999 Initiated School WASH project in Siraha district. Till date, ENPHO has provided WASH services in more than 550 schools at 20 districts.
2000 Production of ENPHO test Kit, arsenic testing and mitigation activities initiated in the Terai.
2001 Initiated research on SODIS and ECOSAN.
2002 Introduced EcoSan toilet at Khokana. Total, 1,430 EcoSan toilets have been constructed in 11 districts.
2003 Recieved Award for Kanchan Arsenic Filter at World Bank Development Marketplace.
2004 Established well-equipped ENPHO WASH Resource Centre.
2005  Environment award from Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.
2006 Carried out country environment analysis for the World Bank.
2007 Initiation of integrated community based WATSAN programme and declaration of Open Defecation Free (ODF) at community level.
2008 Scaling up of waste water treatment system at municipal level and integration of bio-gas system.
2009 Received “Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA)” award for air quality improvement.
Establishment of Environment and Public Health Institute (ENPHI) within ENPHO.
Initiation of Paschim Paaila– A youth campaign against diarrhea epidemic in Western Nepal.
Establishment of Nepal Node for Sustainable Sanitation.
2010 ODF declaration at VDC level.
2011 ECO-SAN poster attained the first prize in pre- SACOSAN IV Colombo, Sri-Lanka.
2012 Started working on urban disaster risk reduction with focus on emergency WASH.
2013 Promotion of Roof Top Agriculture as an adaptation for climate change.
2014 Faecal Sludge Management- service delivery, business model and private sector engagement- in Kathmandu Valley.
2015 The 4th Kyoto World Water Grand Prize.
Co-winner of the Humanitarian Water and Food(WAF) Award.
2016 Celebration of 25-year journey.
Establishment of first pre-fabricated Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant
2017 Partneership with EcoConcern Pvt. Ltd.
Publication of ENPHO’s first Scientific Journal – “Journal of Environment and Public Health”
