Training on ‘Drinking Water Quality and Mass Chlorination’

Under ‘Integrated Water Management in Urban Areas as the core task of Municipal Services’ project, ENPHO with the support of BORDA South Asia and in close coordination with the Godawari Municipality conducted a two-day training on ‘Drinking Water Quality and Mass Chlorination’ for the water supply and sanitation users committee (WSUCs) from the municipality on 5th to 6th July, 2022.

The main objective of the training was to enhance knowledge of participants on water quality and water purification to help provide safe water distribution at the community. The training also aimed to stimulate the existing schemes to adopt chlorination for safe water distribution and raise awareness on importance of proper storage along with operation and maintenance of the dosing pump used in chlorination for water purification.

The first day was focused on theoretical aspects of drinking water quality, covering the information on safe water, water contamination and water borne diseases. With this, multiple barrier approaches, methods of water purification (PoU options) focusing on chlorination process were also discussed. Existing practices and techniques available for chlorination and myth related to chlorination practices was briefed during the first day.

Second day mainly focused on Mass Chlorination, where calculations for chlorine dosing preparation and proper use were shared. Apart from this, proper process of using doing pump, Correct dose, use of free FRC test kits and operation and maintenance of dosing pump were also highlighted. During the practical session, demonstration of chlorine dosing by WSUCs was conducted at the nearest water supply scheme of Jharuwarasi.

A total of 23 participants (2 Female and 21 Male) from 6 different water supply and sanitation users committees (Jharuwarasi WSUCs, Phaidol WSUCs, Godawari WSUCs, Basuki Sikharpa WSUCs, and Lapse Kotdanda WSUCs) from the Godawari municipality participated the training event. The committee representatives were handed over with the Free Residual Chlorine Test procedure flex, to support them with ease in chlorine detection after the mass chlorination done at their respective schemes.

ENPHO in the partnership with BORDA has been implementing the “Integrated Urban Water Management at the Centre of Municipal Services” project in Godawari Municipality and Kirtipur municipality. The project aims to contribute to quality life improvement through the reduction of water and sanitation-related risks and ensure improved water and sanitation services at the municipal level.
