Environment & Public Health Organization (ENPHO), in collaboration with Centre for Affordable Water Sanitation Technology (CAWST), successfully conducted online training on the chlorination of drinking water in emergency situations from 1 to 29 August 2025. The training aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in preparing chlorine solutions, performing high-dose (shock) chlorination, and understanding the concepts of free, combined, and residual chlorine to ensure safe drinking water.

Participants of the Online Training on Chlorination of Drinking Water in Emergencies
The training was delivered through three interactive Zoom sessions on 1, 15, and 29 August 2025, attracting 54 participants (30 male and 24 female) from diverse organizations including local government, development agencies, academic institutions, private organizations, and others. By the end of the course, 12 participants successfully completed the training, while 19 others continued progressing through the modules.

Progress update chart of the participants
Participants shared positive feedback, highlighting the practical applicability of the training.
“The online training gave me valuable insight into the importance of considering factors such as temperature, pH, and turbidity during the chlorination process. Previously, I added chlorine without paying attention to these aspects, but through this training, I realized how critical they are for safe and effective chlorination. The step-by-step guidance and flexibility of learning made the experience meaningful.”
— Farshuram Ghimire, Technical Facilitator, RuDec Nepal
“Before this training, I only knew about household chlorination. Through the online course, I learned about mass chlorination, shock chlorination of wells, and proper chlorine dosing. These new skills will help me improve my own practice and enable me to share knowledge with others for safer drinking water.”
