The E.Coli and Coliform Vial (ECC Vial) is an innovative, simple and easy to use device useful in determination of faecal contamination, through detection of E-coli and Coliform. It contains a selective media for the simultaneous detection of both E-coli and total coliforms in water. The characteristic feature of ECC Vial is its ability to indicate presence of E.coli with blue color and pink/red color for presence of coliform.
The water sample is incubated for 24 hours at body temperature (35oC) in either a pocket incubator or a body belt incubator or a portable mini-incubator. For negative results (i.e. no color change) sample should be incubated for additional 24 hours.

Why ECC Vial?
ECC vial provides on-the-spot water test for E.coli and coliform and easy interpretation of results within 24-48 hrs. This can be particularly helpful for NGOs and INGOs working on water and sanitation projects. The low cost of vial allows private industries such as bottled water suppliers and water tankers to test each batch of drinking water to ensure their water quality before dispatching to end consumers.
It also facilitates regular testing of drinking water supply in schools, households and hospitals on-site at minimal cost.

User’s Instructions
- Wash your hands with soap or sanitise prior to test (wear gloves if you have access to it).
- Label the vial with sample information, date and time and incubation.
- Break and remove the seal on the ECC vial.
- Check the 10 mL water level mark on the vial and fill water sample up to designated mark.
- Place the ECC vial in the incubator. Incubate for 24 hours. If results are negative i.e. no color change, the sample should be incubated for additional 24 hrs. Results are invalid after 48 hrs time period.
The product was introduced and branded in 2019 by Eco-Concern in collaboration with MIT and ENPHO after continuous research. It was a developed as a modification to P/A vial in order to detect both E.coli and Coliform indicative of presence of faecal contamination.
