- To increase use of gender appropriate, environmentally sustainable, improved sanitation services by earthquake affected populations, especially women, men, girls, boys and people of lower castes.
Project Description:
This project is being implemented by ENPHO with the support from GAC and CAWST to enhance the capacity of local organizations on technical aspect of WASH and message delivery so that community people can be influenced to improve or change their WASH behavior. The project is being undertaken in five earthquake affected districts namely Dolakha, Kavrepalanchwok, Sindhupalchwok, Nuwakot

Training package/education material development and distribution

Demonstration and implementation
- Implementation of Model Healthy Community (MHC) approach in five district to demonstrate integrated effort to achieve complete WASH practice at household level
- Established 3 mini lab in district level to demonstrate feasibility of water quality testing at district level.
- Completed baseline for model healthy community and annual survey
- Implemented Behaviour Change Campaign (BCC) applying BCD model focusing on filter use and clean toilet in the five project district targeting 75,000 households.
Major Achievements:
- Altogether 5 communities (one community in each district) having 1,014 households declared as Model Healthy community in the presence of local government and district level organizations. This was declared after meeting 15 indicators of WASH practices in each household.
- The behavior change campaign abled to ensure proper filter use in 23,228 households, use of clean toilet in 31,612 households and proper hand washing station in 23,483 households.
- Three water quality testing mini labs established in there different project district in coordination with local organization in business model and two mini labs already started their service.
- ENPHO Training Centre experienced intensive implementation of behavior change campaign in Behaviour Centric Design (BCD) model which has increased confidence level of the team to implement such campaign in another area.

Water Security and WASH Resilience

Aim:
- To ensure access to safely managed WASH services with sustained hygiene behaviour practices and capacities to manage their WASH needs even in the disaster thereby enhancing water security and to support government’s priority program on development of water supply and sanitation.
Project Description:
In order to contribute to achieve sustainable goal on water and sanitation by 2030, basic level WASH facilities need to be promoted to safely manage the situation with acquaintance of innovation along with capacity enhancement at local level. According to Department of Sanitation and Sewerage, 2016 the water supply has estimated to be 87% and sanitation coverage is 98.8% (DWSS, 2018). However, access to safe water and improved sanitation in Nepal is confronted by various challenges.
Dolakha has 86.8% water supply coverage (DWSS, 2017) and 99% sanitation coverage (NSHCC, 2017). However, with the consultation with district offices and participatory community discussions in the district revealed that there are several severe issues in functionality of the water supply systems, water quality, water source depletion, sustainability, hardships in access to water and sanitation. For this, achieving and sustaining ODF status of the district and moving towards total sanitation, enhancing functionality and sustainability of the water supply systems are still the key issues that need to be addressed in the district.
ENPHO, together with local NGO CDF, implemented the ‘Water Security and Climate Resilience’ project in partnership with WaterAid Nepal, to ensure access to safely managed WASH services through capacity enhancement and sustained hygiene practices to manage the WASH need of the community. For enhancing the water security and to support government’s priority program on development of water supply and sanitation, the project aimed to work in the disaster situation as well. ENPHO provided the technical support to CDF for the delivery of sustainable WASH services to the targeted wards of Kalinchowk and Sailung Rural Municipality.
Project Outputs:
- Business Plan for 3 Water Supply Schemes(WSS) and WASH Plan for 2 Rural Municipalities has been drafted;
- 5 events of Ward level workshops formulation of WASH plan were conducted;
- 10 people trained on water and waste management through kitchen gardening;
- 2 trainings on Water Safety Plan were conducted for Water Scheme Users Committee.

Major Achievements:
- Vulnerable and marginalized people are aware of their rights and have equitable access to safely managed water services at the household, community and school levels;
- Functional WSUCs that are better able to implement Water Safety Plans and manage Water Supply Schemes;
- Rural Municipalities have prioritized WASH including DRR in their annual plans and budgets;
- Local government has an established mechanism to address the demands of communities in relation to WASH services;
- Schools have inclusive and functional Sanitation and hygiene facilities;
- Target communities and schools are aware and are practicing total proper hygiene behaviors;
- Schools which are trained on WASH Resilience are prioritizing WASH in their School Improvement Plans.

Aim:
To improve nutritional status of women and children in Nepal
Project Description:
Suaahara II is a five-year, comprehensive, community focused multi-sectoral nutrition program aiming to improve health and nutritional status of the people, particularly that of 1000 days women and their children. The program works under consortium approach in which ENPHO has been contributing to achieve Intermediate Result 1.2 -“Household Adopts Essential WASH Actions”.
In this fiscal year, the program particularly focused upon four major activities; providing technical assistance in contributing for national ODF campaign, provide technical assistance and support local GoN bodies to attained healthy home status contributing to total sanitation movement in Nepal, promote two key priority behaviors; water treatment and hand washing through its frontline workers and social media platforms and collaborate with private sectors actors to scale up establishment of WASH marts to improve access of affordable WASH products in remote areas. Additionally, Suaahara II has also implemented Risk Communication and Community Engagement activities to support GoN preparedness and response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to mitigate risk of COVID-19 in the working districts.
Project Outputs:
- Provided technical support and facilitation to increase improved sanitation facilities for national ODF campaign;
- 86,884 community people reached through 3,818 WASH triggering and orientation events and counselled more than 99,777 households through home visits on healthy home behaviors;
- Trained 588 newly-elected bodies/ WASH CC members and MNSP stakeholders from 23 districts (Panchthar, Dhading, Dolakha, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchowk, Gorkha, Lamjung, Myagdi, Nawalparasi-East, Nawalparasi-West, Arghakhachi, Bardiya, Dang, Gulmi, Kapilbastu, Palpa, Rupandehi, Dailekh, Salyan, Achham, Bajhang, Dadeldhura, Kailali) on total sanitation;
- 153 local leaders from 6 municipalities of 6 districts (Achham, Baglung, Bajura, Myagdi, Palpa and Nuwakot) were provided with technical support for formulation of WASH plans;
- 199 local tailors have been trained to make re-usable sanitary pads ;
- Explored, identified and collaborated with private sectors to strengthen WASH supply chain thereby improving access to affordable WASH products in remote areas;
- Reached 1,232,635 households through COVID-19 response activities and provided tele-counselling on hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and other COVID-19 related WASH behaviors.
Major Achievements:
- Five districts; Kapilvastu, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Solukhumbu and Bhojpur attained ODF through technical support of Suaahara II
- Four wards of three districts (Kwholasothar RM-7 and Kwholasothar RM-8 of Lamjung, Galkot M-5 of Baglung and Kamalbazar M-6 of Achham) have been declared Total Sanitation Oriented Healthy Home Wards.
- Altogether 7,441 households have attained healthy home status including households in four healthy home declared wards;
- 333 new WASH marts were established to increase excess of affordable WASH materials like water filter, soap, toilet cleaning materials etc. at local level.
Integrated Urban Water Management at the Center of Municipal Public Services

Project Description:
It is essential to step towards sustainable management of water and sanitation services through integrated approaches incorporating various urban issues.
Hence, Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) in the partnership with BORDA has implemented “Integrated Urban Water Management at the centre of municipal services” project in Godawari and Kritipur muncipalities.
The specific objective of the project is to:
- Provide support and services in development, implementation and operations in sustainable environmental and WASH services.
- Enhance the knowledge and capacity of municipal environmental service providers and stakeholders in sustainable water management sector.
Project Outputs:
- Trained 22 municipal officers and water user’s committee on Water Source Protection
- Trained 41 waste management operators on Solid Waste Management
- Trained 11 people in water quality sampling and testing using ENPHO Water Quality Test kit
- Installed Chlorine dosing units at five water supply schemes of Godawari Municipaility
- 14 sets of ENPHO Water Quality Test kit distributed to wards of Godawari Municipality

Aim:
The aim of WASH SDG Project is to contribute Nepal Government in achieving WASH SDG targets.
Project Description:
WASH SDG Nepal is a four years, comprehensive community focused project dedicated to meet the overall of “Sustainable and equitable use of WASH by all”. The project aims to contribute to the government’s target on SDG goal of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. With the support of WASH Alliance International (WAI), ENPHO in collaboration with WAI consortium partner organizations have completed the first phase of the project implementation from 1st July 2018 to 30th June 2020. Where, demand generation from the community and ensuring an enabling environment by local government and promoting female led WASH entrepreneurs are the major achievements.
The second phase of the project has been planned for July 2020- September 2022 including 3 months reporting period, where demand from community and local stakeholders would be ensure through coordination and collaboration with private entrepreneurs and cooperatives, focusing the public pathways of project intervention.
The project overall focuses on:
- Improving behavior change interventions leading to increased demand for improved WASH facilities and practices,
- WASH service provision leading to increased availability and affordability of WASH products and services which contributes to sustainable and equitable access to WASH and
- Strengthening of the WASH governance and institutional framework leading to governments enabling efficient and effective delivery of inclusive and sustainable WASH services, which contributes to sustainable and equitable access to WASH.
Project Outputs:
- 18 Improved latrines have been constructed as for demonstration at both the municipalities;
- Business plan for registered BSF entrepreneur has been developed for the sustainability support for private sector;
- Under WASH SDG project, ENPHO in collaboration with local government, schools and Private Sector “Smart Paani” have installedwater purifying system in selected five schools of Bheriganga Municipality (2) and Barahatal Rural Municipality (3);
- Biogas plant connecting the latrine, contributing to safe kitchen management along with productive reuse of by-product have been installed at 88 HHs including 10 Dalit HHs;
- Supported 10 quarantine designated places at both the municipalities with Pedal Operated Handwashing Station, temporary toilets and Chlorine solutions during COVID-19 Pandemic;
- Training on Leadership Development focused on women empowerment have been organized;
- Orientation on COVID-19 and WASH have been organized for awareness raising.

Major Achievements:
- Altogether three WASH entrepreneurs have been registered at Bheriganga and Barahataal Municipality. Out of three entrepreneurs, two of them are Female. One of which is producing bio-sand filter and another is operating WASH Mart business.
- Vulnerability assessment reports, a draft WASH plan has been developed. Also, 9 draft WASH improvement plans of schools and 4 draft Climate Resilient Water Safety Plan of Water Supply Schemes (WSS) have also been developed.
- After the continuous advocacy at both the municipalities, budget for WASH Bheriganga Municipality has been increased by 14% whereas Barahataal Rural Municipality hiked the budget by 58% compared to the first year of the project implementation.
- Improved latrine designs have been included in visibility copy to ease people willing to upgrade and improve their existing latrines.
- WASH improvements at five selected schools from both the municipalities have been completed
- 88 including 10 Dalit HHs have installed Biogas plant connecting the latrine, contributing to safe kitchen management along with productive reuse of by-product. Urine applications have also been adopted for model community.
- Linkage created of a Dalit female entrepreneur with Rural Municipality for homemade sanitary pad and also coordinated for pad distribution at schools with discounted rates.
